A Twist On A Classic #Recipe For The #Crockpot!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with my take on a yummy, classic dish.  I don't know about you, but one of my favorite things in the world is gravy.  Now, like other dishes, I prefer my gravy without meat. So, I played around a bit and found a way to make stroganoff, one of my favorite gravies, without beef! :-) Take a look and see what you think of this mushroom stroganoff recipe.

Ingredients:
1-2 14oz package(s) white button (whole or sliced) mushrooms cleaned
1 14oz package of baby bellas cleaned
1 14oz package of shitake mushrooms cleaned
2 medium onions chopped
2 cups vegetable stock
1/2 cup white wine
1 teaspoon rosemary
1/4 cup vegetarian worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional)
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
4-5 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon butter
2-3 tablespoons of sour cream
Salt, pepper, and parsley to taste

Put all the ingredients except the sour cream and parsley in a crockpot. Turn the crockpot on high for 5-6 hours. Stir in the sour cream and parsley. Serve over egg noodles, potatoes, rice, or any other starch you enjoy.

Yep, that's it!  Another lazy cook's dream. Like most of my recipes, to be honest. If you don't have or don't like any of the types of mushrooms I listed, you can change up the mushrooms to whatever you prefer. You can also use canned mushrooms if that's what you have on hand.  Also, you can get chopped, frozen onions from a lot of grocery stores, so that might be another time saver if you don't like to chop onions.

The flavor of the frozen onions isn't quite as strong as fresh onions, and they are mushy even before cooking, but if you're in a time pinch or don't have any onions in the house they might be an option for you.  If you have the time, and you use fresh onions, you can caramelize the onions in a skillet before putting them in the crockpot. This will add more flavor and deepen the color of the stroganoff. Just put them in a skillet with the butter and olive oil and cook them until they caramelize. If you add the paprika to the onions in the skillet, it will help develop the flavor of the spice a bit. Add the garlic when the onions are almost done and then put the contents of the skillet in the crockpot and deglaze the skillet with the wine.

If you don't like alcohol or don't have any wine in the house, you can use 1/4 cup red wine vinegar instead. There are also things you can add to this stroganoff to make it richer or to get more vegetables in your diet.  I've found green, leafy vegetables tend to make broths richer, so you can add spinach, kale, or even broccoli if you'd like.  You can also add carrots for some sweetness and/or peas for color. If your stroganoff is a little runny, you can make a slurry by mixing a little cornstarch with cold water and stir that in to thicken it up.

Bon appetit! :-)

Sometimes You Need To Break Out The Big Guns... 😉

Hey Everyone! 😊

Happy Friday! Since it's the beginning of the weekend, and hopefully all the cares of the week are tucked away, I thought it might be fun to take a peek at how the Fae solve their problems. Enjoy... 😉

Excerpt from Captivated by the Winter King
A loud knock sounded at the door, making Ankou jump.  He was astonished to realize he had fallen asleep and he had no idea what time it was.  He kicked himself.  How could he have slept when his Anamchara might be in danger?  "Enter!" he called.

Tairise came through the door, speaking as ta did.  "There's news!  I think I know where she has gone."

Careful to slide the slumbering cat from his lap onto the couch, Ankou jumped to his feet.  "Where?"

Motioning the king to follow ta, Tairise led him to the lower levels of the palace.  Ta explained as they walked.  "One of the guards finally admitted to having seen the runes flare over the door he was assigned to watch yesterday.  They indicated that those who passed were residents of the castle, so he did not report the incident."

"That's against protocol!  Why did it take so long for him to come forward?"

Hesitating, Tairise tried to find a way to make it sound better.  Giving it up as a lost cause, ta just said, "He has been taking bribes to allow certain nobles to enter and exit the palace without entering a note of their passage into the record.  He is an Anthropophagi, so he could not see through the glamour and thought it was one of those who had paid him."  Seeing the rage in tas king's eyes, ta continued, "He is being held, awaiting your pleasure."

Forcing himself not to give into his anger, Ankou took slow, deep breaths.  "So Kate has been kidnapped by Duibhne and Gormal."

The monarch's voice was mild, but Tairise knew the fury that boiled beneath that deceptively calm surface.  Choosing tas words carefully, ta said, "I believe so, your majesty.  There is no other scenario I can think of that fits all the available evidence."

Knowing he was a hair's breadth from losing control, Ankou focused on breathing in and out.  "Where have they gone?"

"I don't know their destination, but they left through the caves," the Elf pointed to the door ta had brought tas king to.

Considering the options, Ankou realized only one fit.  "They are taking her to the portal.  They intend to send her back to the human world."

Nodding, Tairise conceded, "That is possible.  If so, they will be breaking one of the most basic tenets of the law.  They know that, so I can't think what their plan might be afterward."

Getting an iron grip on his temper, Ankou forced himself to think through the possibilities.  He could use the Black Coach to get to the portal ahead of them, but he would run the risk that they would realize he was waiting and alter their plans.  If they did that, he would have to hunt them without the advantage of knowing their destination.

As he debated his options, a scene flickered before his eyes of Kate's body lying cold and white in the snow.  The Black Coach was in the background.  The vision made him realize his instinct to follow behind Duibhne and Gormal, instead of racing ahead of them, was the right one.  He had never been more grateful for his prophetic power and he sent a silent prayer of thanks to the goddess.  With his decision made, he turned to his counselor and said one word. "Go."

"I can accompany you, if you wish, your majesty," ventured the Elf.

Shaking his head, Ankou put aside all good and gentle feelings.  As he fully embraced his anger for the first time in a long time, his eyes glowed and his teeth elongated.  Focusing his power, he summoned the Genii Cucullati and smiled.  "I have all the aid I will need."

The evil light behind tas friend's smile made Tairise gasp.  As the ghostly forms of the Genii Cucullati congealed into existence, ta backed away, trembling.  The hooded spirits were the stuff of nightmares.  Ta almost pitied Gormal and Duibhne.

With a gesture, the Winter king set the Genii Cucullati on the trail of the two Elves.  The wraiths swirled around him, lifting him into their embrace, and surged through the door to the tunnel beyond.  As they departed, an eerie howl filled the hallway sending Tairise running for the stairs.  The wind of their passage swept the door closed behind them, and the resulting bang echoed through the empty corridor.  The noise jarred the Elf to tas senses and ta paused on the stairs, looking over tas shoulder.

What ta saw made ta rub tas eyes to clear them.  But the image remained.  The place where the hooded spirits had manifested now held two glowing, blood-red outlines.  One male.  One female.  Tairise shuddered.  The Genii Cucullati were outside the mortal realm.  Creatures of the Summerlands, they answered to rules beyond the ken of even the wisest Fae.  By attempting to tamper with the Siorghra bond, Duibhne and Gormal had earned their fate.  But ta did not envy them.

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 1276

Hey Everyone! 😊

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Twelve-Hundred-Seventy-Six:
My hominid-servant remains rather indolent, which is, again, consistent with the sort of weather that occurs at these coordinates during this portion of the planet’s revolution around the local star; however, she has begun the habit of spontaneously deciding to make new and unusual edibles. Fortunately, my furry companions and I are sometimes the beneficiaries of these unexpected bouts of creativity. And most of the delicacies she has produced, thus far, have been both interesting and delicious. I have to say, if I am going to be forced into a period of inactivity, there are worse ways to spend it.

Well... I guess hominids can occasionally come in handy for something. 😉 You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. 😉 Happy reading, everyone!

Things Aren't Always What They Seem...

Hey Everyone!! :-)

Here's a little bit more of the third installment in the Petri Dish Chronicles! As always, the disclaimer is that this is a draft and, as such, it's unedited and likely full of errors and is subject to revision, revamping, and being completely scrapped and rewritten. But, with that in mind, I'm reasonably satisfied with the basics of it, at least at the moment, or I wouldn't have bothered posting it. Enjoy! :-)

Excerpt from Shifting Paradigms:
“There are a lot of markets in the rainbow, but this one is larger and more diverse than any I’ve seen before. Usually, if I’m shopping, it's for something specific, and I stick to niche markets, but this..." Chessie shook her head. “This is something else entirely.”

An alien of a species Petri didn’t recognize completed a complicated gesture involving its limbs and a lot of head bobbing that the human merchant it was interacting with seemed to understand and agree to the terms of. The man, in turn, waved over a male Paka, who began performing what looked like a ritual dance to Petri. She wasn’t sure if the dance was part of the negotiations or if that was what the alien had bought, but the two moved off into the crowd floating above them as the human turned to the next customer.

What caught Petri’s eye next outraged her. What appeared to be a young, human child, no more than 5 or 6 years old, was being auctioned off to a small group of adult humans not far from where they were standing. She moved to get closer and try to help the child, but a hand on her arm stopped her. Whipping her head around, she saw it was Vlad who had grabbed her. Her eyes flew to meet his.

“You may not interfere.”

“You’re just going to allow this?" she gasped, pointing at the seemingly terrified child for emphasis.

“You need to remember, all is not what it appears here. Just because a person’s avatar is that of a child does not mean the person is a child. What you see as a human child may be a human adult, an adult of another species, or a non-sentient program. Also, the sale may very well be with the consent of all involved. If I’m not mistaken, you, yourself, engaged in not dissimilar transactions regarding your physical body not too long ago.”

Some of the tenseness left Petri’s posture. “So, that’s not really a kid?”

Vlad shrugged. “I’m simply reminding you that emotional reactions to what you perceive to be true about others are not appropriate here.”

Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with another video I wanted to share. This is something I've written about in the past here: #Imagine A World Without #Regulations. The danger in a lack of regulation is clear, and this is a prime example of that danger. But go ahead and watch the video for yourselves. Peace!

Pasta Fagioli Soup #Recipe!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

This is one of my favorite soups. It seems like it would be really light, but because the cheese is so rich, it's actually very hearty and filling. Enjoy! :-)

Ingredients:
4 cups vegetable stock or water
2 cups ditalini pasta
1 28oz can crushed tomatoes
2 12oz cans white beans
3 onions diced
6 cloves garlic minced
3 cups fresh basil chopped
1 cup fresh oregano chopped
1 cup pecorino romano shredded
3 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

In a stockpot, add the onions and olive oil and saute until the onions start to caramelize. Add the garlic, oregano, and half the basil and stir until the herbs wilt. Add the tomatoes, salt and pepper, and stock or water and stir to combine. Add the beans and stir to combine. Bring the soup to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for an hour or two, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasonings as necessary. Add the pasta and continue simmering until the pasta is almost cooked. Remove from the heat and stir in the cheese and the rest of the basil. Serve hot with a side of crusty bread.

Buon Appetito!

#APC #Spotlight: Cigerets, Guns & Beer By Phillip T. Stephens!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I've got Phillip Stephens in my APC spotlight, today! Phillip is an active and supportive member of the  Authors-Professional Co-op Facebook group and his mystery, suspense, thriller, action/adventure novel, Cigerets, Guns & Beer, looks great! Here's the description:
Dodd breaks up a convenience store robbery when his car breaks down in Sweet Water Falls, Texas. What’s the thanks he gets? The sheriff won’t let him leave, the car lot can’t find the parts and everybody wants him for something—sales pitch, church membership, and even stud pony.

But most of all, it seems a family named Dodd were shot down robbing the bank in 1949 and the half million they stole remains missing. Everyone thinks Dodd returned to dig up the loot and no one intends to let him leave until he finds it—along with (or so the legends go) a long lost flying saucer.

#February2021 #IndieBooksBeSeen #Indie #Author #Books #Monthly #BookReview!

Hey Everyone!! :-) (Put On Amazon!)

It's the 18th again, so time for my #IndieBooksBeSeen monthly indie author book review!! Enjoy! :-)

Pagan - The Trials of the Haliorunnae by Vanda M Denton:

When the world spins out of control and you can't seem to find the right course of action to affect your own destiny, who do you blame? This is the second book in this series and, like the first, I'm having a hard time finding a way to describe it without giving too much away. Also like the first, this book deals with current existential crises that society struggles with and, thus far, has failed to prove equal to solving. It's a glimpse at the logical conclusion of current events, a warning against continuing on our current path of self-destruction, and an entertaining story all rolled into one. Five stars and I very much hope there will be more.

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 1270

Day Twelve-Hundred-Seventy:
The temperatures at the coordinates on this planet where I am stationed have been consistently low and there is no evidence that this trend will end soon. This is to be expected for this point in the planet’s revolution around the local star; however, I find the resulting lack of activity outside the portals in the walls of my domicile to be frustrating. Likewise, my hominid-servant seems to be suffering from a certain amount of lethargy, which is also typical for her during this portion of the solar-cycle, and that only exacerbates the problem. There is little to study, at the moment, inside or out, now that I finally have the peace and quiet to concentrate. Unfortunately, I have found that this is a common conundrum when dealing with hominids.

Hominids can be such frustrating creatures! 😉 You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. 😉 Happy reading, everyone!

#CoverReveal: Titanian’s Phoenix By Victoria Saccenti!

COVER REVEAL

Titanian’s Phoenix
 by Victoria Saccenti

Cover designed by Scott Carpenter

Blurb:

She’s the mate he never expected. And she has powers she never asked for…

Maya Brown is New York tough. She doesn’t believe in magic—until she’s kidnapped along with her eccentric godmother, Anna. By elves.

Freed by a strange power, and reeling from bizarre revelations about her heritage, Maya follows Anna’s plea to seek out a man named Soren at—of all things—a magical bar. Maya doesn’t believe in love at first sight, either, but when she encounters seven-plus feet of muscle and mood-changing eyes, her body does a full-on reset.

Nothing shakes up Soren Westerberg, Titanian Enforcer assigned to NYC. Until a beautiful human woman with golden skin and lost brown eyes walks into a bar. In one trembling instant he knows that she’s his mate—who promptly faints away in his arms.

Their bond is instant, gloriously intense, and a miracle. Soren’s life scroll never foretold a mate, but now that he has her, he’ll protect her at all costs. Because she’s not just his—she's also an extraordinary being coming into her power. And ready or not, that makes her a target of his cruelest enemy.

Excerpt:

Prologue

Lord Gustaf Westerberg had reached the edge of his patience. Muttering a string of invectives under his breath, he lowered his dense ebony eyebrows at his reflection. Several times, he’d been tempted to kick the massive gilded mirror before him in utter frustration. His broad fingertips made it nearly impossible to fasten the tiny buttons of his formal shirt and his crisp white vest. Finally, he finished with the last button and flexed his fingers, encouraging blood flow. He pulled a linen handkerchief from the pocket of his slacks and wiped his damp forehead dry.

With a bit more composure, he turned to pick up the oblong black velvet box on his dresser. He selected the essential choice for tonight’s event: his silver-and-sapphire cuff links. The stunning heirlooms had belonged to his father, Lord Troels, who in turn had received the pair from his father long centuries ago. Family tradition dictated that the ancient set, fashioned with the Titanian symbol, the wide T and Celtic ribbon wrapped around the middle, should be passed down through the ages from one Titanian leader to the next.

He linked the cuffs and dropped his hands to his sides. A soft movement behind him got his attention. Beatrix had entered the master chamber. Draped on her right wrist was his bow tie. A wooden hanger with his tailcoat jacket dangled from her left hand.

“I detest these functions.” He smiled, contradicting his words. “But they’re all worth it just to see you dressed like a goddess, my love. Älskling, you are a vision.”

Indeed, she was. Her gossamer gown embroidered with silver thread, tiny sapphires, and diamonds encased her beautiful lithe body within a shimmering cloud. The high neckline demurely covered her phoenix mate mark from strangers’ eyes. The crimson bird, poised for flight, was private, his to enjoy and love, no one else’s. She piled her fire-red hair—a nod to her Scottish ancestry—in a high twist anchored with sapphire-and-silver combs. He had to resist the temptation to pull that silky cascade down and run his fingers through it as he inhaled its delicious scent.

“And you are a such a charmer,” Beatrix responded, a light blush covering her cheeks. She hooked the hanger on the mahogany valet stand. With a soft swish of skirts, she stood next to Gustav.

“Will you do the honors?” he murmured.

“Always. Can’t let you receive our guests with a crooked tie.”

“It’s the twenty-first century. By now, all of us should’ve learned to relax, be less stuffy. I can say the identical ancient formalities and pleasantries wearing a T-shirt and jeans.”

Beatrix laughed, a musical trill that delighted his heart. “Ah, yes. Except Ambassador Devon is a stick-in-the-mud representative whose ego needs to be massaged with as much pomp and circumstance as he can get.” She lifted the tips of his collar, slid the tie in place, and made a bow with unerring accuracy. “There, you’re perfect.”

She returned to the valet stand, held up the jacket, and helped him slide his arms through.

“How do I look?”

“Be still my heart.” She fluttered her eyelids. Her dark blue irises sparkled above her perfect straight nose. “I’ll explain in detail when the banquet is over.”

He turned to her. “That’s it. I’m canceling dinner and sending everyone home with a doggie bag.”

“No, sir.” Laughing, she grasped him by his wide shoulders and, despite the height difference of a foot and half between them, turned him around with ease.

“You’re a tough customer,” he sighed, opening the heavy paneled door. “After you, my lady.” He stood aside, allowing Beatrix to exit their chamber first.

Ornate bronze sconces, spaced every ten feet, illuminated the arched corridor outside their door. Wrought iron railings lined the open spaces under each arch and the elegant round staircase that led downstairs. The muted sounds of violins playing in the main level and soft conversation streamed upstairs. Despite the raging winter storm outside, his sturdy windows safeguarded the sophisticated environment, ideal for negotiations and treaties.

Utterly pleased, Gustaf offered his arm to Beatrix.

She flicked her finger at him. “Not yet. The ambassador is in the antechamber to your office.”

“Oh?”

“Devon said he had some important matters to discuss before supper, so I ushered him in there.”

Frowning, he grasped her hand. “The situation with Roald and his mate was happily resolved. I haven’t heard a peep from Soren or Brant in New York. I wonder… Maybe he’s aware of the recent unexplained deaths. However, we’ve kept a tight lid on that matter. If he knows, it means someone in the inner circle leaked the information.”

Beatrix eyed him intently. “That’s why I brought him to the antechamber.”

“Let’s go find out.”

She resisted his tug. “Do you think I should go in with you?”

“Absolutely.”

With Beatrix in tow, Gustaf opened the door to the antechamber and scanned the room. The ambassador was nowhere to be seen. Giving his wife a worried side-glance, he opened the door to his office.

The single bouillotte lamp on his mahogany desktop illuminated the circumference around its base. Otherwise, the rest of his office was basically dark.

Holding his long white hair away from his eyes, the ambassador bent over Gustaf’s desk, intently studying a Titanian family scroll. When he heard Gustaf and Beatrix enter, he jerked up his head.

“Riveting read, isn’t it? May I help you find anything…Ambassador?” Gustaf couldn’t suppress the twinge of sarcasm in his voice.

Straightening, Ambassador Devon flicked his hair over his shoulder, revealing a beet-red pointy ear. He offered an apologetic look at Gustaf as he released the ends of the scroll. The edges curved up, wanting to return to their original rolled position.

Gustaf huffed softly. Beatrix squeezed his hand. Her discreet warning to hold his temper reached home. After centuries together, Beatrix knew when he seethed with anger. What the hell was the ambassador doing searching around the Titanian family’s most intimate records?

“Well, I… You see, uh… Titanian scrolls are legendary. Items of great interest for those of us who’ve never seen one.” Color tinged the ambassador’s usually pale skin. “I saw this one just over there.” He pointed at Gustaf’s tall mahogany cabinet and shrugged. “And couldn’t resist the temptation. It’s quite beautiful, with all the gilded lettering and mysterious symbols. I suppose you know what everything means.”

The ambassador was an unflappable minister. He must’ve honed deceit and subterfuge to a fine art through long years of service to his race. Despite all that work, the lie still glared in the elf’s expression, and that was the problem. Gustaf’s stomach churned with impotence. He couldn’t call him on it without creating all sorts of alliance debacles, scandals that would rip apart relationships.

Beatrix squeezed his hand again. He took a deep breath and calmed his fury. He went around the desk, picked up the scroll with the tips of his fingers, and moved to the ornate cabinet where the rest of the family’s ancient scrolls were stored. With slow and deliberate gestures, he opened a drawer, tucked the scroll inside, and slammed it shut. The message to the ambassador was clear: I know you snooped and went through my belongings without my consent.

“I understand you want to discuss certain issues, Ambassador.”

Ambassador Devon’s face grew redder than his ears. “I…ah. Perhaps after supper is best.” With that, the elf slipped around Gustaf and Beatrix and crossed the antechamber. Instead of waiting for his hosts, he disappeared into the hallway.

Gustaf blew out his cheeks. “What is he up to, älskling? Doesn’t he understand I could kick his uppity ass out of my house? I’m so angry, I could pull all that stringy white hair out of his scalp. That was a complete breach of etiquette.”

“Yes.” She nodded. “But think of the diplomatic consequences before acting. Could you tell which scroll he was reading?”

“Hmmm… I’m almost certain he was reading the scroll that follows Soren’s and maybe part of Hagen’s path. Son of a bitch. He’s given me itchy ants all over my body.”

“I don’t like it either. We need to study the scroll. There’s something in Soren’s path he wanted to learn.”

“Evidently, but what?” Gustaf rubbed his chin. “And why was he snooping? He could’ve asked. Elves are supposed to be allies, not spies.”

Beatrix kissed his hand. “Supper and guests first. When they’re gone, we’ll come back and check what’s in it. It’s possible a new symbol appeared. Sound good?”

“Yes, my love.”

“Remember, Soren isn’t alone in New York. Brant is with him. They watch each other’s backs.”

“Thanks for reminding me. That makes me feel a little better.” He offered Beatrix his arm, feigning a calm he didn’t feel at all. He wouldn’t stop worrying until that bastard left the ancestral home and he could check every detail in Soren’s scroll.

Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with another video I wanted to share. Several videos, actually. Together, I think these videos do a good job of illustrating the point that it's a big club and we ain't in it. This is why regular people have to come together and unite against the oligarchs. It's the only way we'll ever have a chance of saving ourselves. Peace!

Hearty Vegetable Ragout Winter #Recipe!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

With cold weather here, I'm always looking for something warm and hearty to curl up with in front of the TV. This recipe is quick and easy to make and does a wonderful job of filling you up. Enjoy! :-)

Ingredients:
3 cups vegetable stock
2 cups dry red wine (your favorite kind)
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup tomato paste
2 20 oz containers button mushrooms sliced
1 20 oz container baby bellas sliced
3 large onions chopped
2 carrots chopped
2 cups broccoli florets
3 cups kale chopped
6 cloves garlic minced
2 tbsp paprika
1 tbsp smoked paprika
1 tbsp thyme
3 tbsp rosemary
2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
6 tbsp flour
4 tbsp olive oil
6 tbsp butter
Salt and pepper to taste

In a large, deep-sided skillet or saucepan, add the olive oil and onions and cook until the onions soften. Add the mushrooms and continue cooking until the mushrooms soften and the onions caramelize. Add the garlic and stir to combine. Add and melt the butter and add the flour and cook until the flour browns. Whisk in the wine and use it to deglaze the pan; make sure all the flour lumps break up. Allow the wine to simmer for a couple of minutes and then whisk in the tomato paste. Add the stock, carrots, broccoli, and the rest of the seasonings. Cook until the sauce thickens, taste, and adjust seasonings as necessary. Add the kale and the cream and continue cooking until the kale begins to wilt. Remove the ragout from the heat and serve warm over rice, pasta, or potatoes with a side of garlic bread.

Bon appetit!

Don't Follow The Lights... 😉

Hey Everyone!! 😊

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to pine for a little sunshine. So, I thought it might be fun to start the weekend off with a little glimpse into the land of perpetual summer. Enjoy! 😊

Excerpt from Bound by the Summer Prince:
The sun was warm on her skin, and the smells that suffused the town were both sweet and strange.  Somehow the sensations combined to create a feeling of well-being in her, and she didn’t want anything to interfere with that.

Watching his Anamchara, Uaine could see her visibly relax as they walked through the town.  He was charmed by her obvious fascination with the town's residents, and enjoyed her child-like enthusiasm when she saw something new.

Noticing that the temperature had increased quite a bit as they walked, he asked; “Are you too warm?”

“Hmmm…?” She said distractedly as she kept her eyes on the passing crowd. “Oh no, I love the heat.  I’ve never been a fan of winter.”

Marveling again at how perfect this female was for him, Uaine just smiled and nodded.

“Are you feeling better?”

“A bit.  The town feels like a happy place for some reason.”

“Trade is good today, my mother has managed to get a few goods from other kingdoms here, and the people are enjoying their bargain hunting.  Their happiness is reflected in the energy of the town.”

“How can I possibly be affected by the local Faes’ happiness?”

“Magic is everywhere in Fairie, it saturates the air and the ground.  Some magics, especially wild magics, are heavily influenced by mood.  If the local populace were angry, the feel of the town would be very different.  It’s even possible that a storm would form.”

“The weather is affected by peoples’ moods?”

“It can be.”

“So it’s sunny today because people are happy?”

“Maybe, but not necessarily.  Wild magics are unpredictable.  I don’t know how a different mood would manifest, I only know it would be different than it is now.”

Sighing, she shook her head and pulled her hand from the prince’s. “The more I learn about this place, the weirder it seems.”

Uaine walked up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders. “But strange doesn’t necessarily mean bad.”  He slid one hand down her right arm and reclaimed her hand. “Come with me, I’d like to show you something.”

Roni followed her Anamchara, and again wondered at how amazingly handsome he was.  His hair glowed in the late-day sun, and it almost seemed as though light emanated from within him.  He moved with the grace of a predator, and she knew from their nights together how strong, yet gentle, he was.

The thought of leaving made her heart ache, and she had to remind herself that it had been painful to leave her parents too, but she needed to protect herself.  The day had been well spent.  She had a much better grasp of how the town was laid out, and thought she would be able to navigate from one end to the other by herself.

It seemed her most likely chance of success would be to skirt around the edges as much as possible, and try to avoid people.  Seeing no reason to delay, and knowing that if she did her courage might fail her and she might never be able to leave Uaine, Roni decided that she would make her escape the following day.

“Tomorrow I’m coming back here by myself. I know you’re busy, but I want to explore some more.”

Uaine considered her words. He would certainly prefer it if his mate did not wander around the town alone, the potential for harm was too great, but he knew that if he tried to prevent her she would become angry.  She needed to relax, and if walking around the town would help her do that, he didn’t see a problem with it.  Besides, she was his mate, not his child, and the future queen of the Summer Court, he couldn’t exactly forbid her from doing as she chose.  A few guards following at a discrete distance would ensure that help would be on hand should she need it, and if she didn’t run into trouble then she need never know they were there.

Satisfied with his plan, Uaine nodded. “As you wish, my love, but please be careful.”

Roni just smiled at him, and then her breath caught in her throat as they reached the crest of the hill they had been climbing.  The sun was starting to set, and the vantage point her mate had brought her to watch it from was spectacular.

From where they stood, it appeared that the sun was sinking into the forest.  At first, it was a brilliant ball of orange, red, and yellow that appeared as though it would set the foliage ablaze.  But as it sunk lower in the sky, the colors mellowed and when it reached the tops of the trees it had faded to a light yellow, like a lemon lollipop that was melting away in a sea of green.

The sky itself turned magenta, tangerine, and gold with the dying rays, and somehow Roni got the feeling that all of Fairie was holding its breath; just waiting for the sun to finish setting before carrying on.  When it sunk below the horizon, and twilight set in, it seemed as if the whole world sighed.

Smiling up at the prince, Roni had tears in her eyes. It was all she could do to hold fast to her resolution.  Even still, she decided, then and there, to make their last night together something she could hold onto for the rest of her days.  “Thank you, Uaine, that was amazing.”

Raising his mate’s hand to his lips, Uaine placed a gentle kiss on the back of it. “You are very welcome, my love, there is much about Fairie that is beautiful.”

Hand-in-hand, they began walking slowly back up the road towards the castle.  As they strolled, Roni marveled at the floating bits of light that began to appear.

“Those are will-o’-the-wisps, my love, and they are pretty but they can also be quite dangerous.”

“How can a little bit of light be dangerous?”

“Because they are not just little bits of light; they are tiny Fae who have the ability to emit light.  They can be quite spiteful, and will do everything they can to trick someone into following them into a trap.”

“How do they do that?”

“By persuading their victim to follow their light.  It usually only works when the person is disoriented and it is otherwise dark, but it often proves fatal for them.”

“So, they might lead someone over a cliff in the dark?”

“Yes, that would be something that would be typical of them.”

“Then why are they allowed to stay?”

“Because they are not evil, they are just a part of Fairie. It would not be right to punish them for being what they are. Much of Fairie is both beautiful and dangerous, with time you will learn how to appreciate the beauty while avoiding the danger.”

“I guess I need to remember not to follow the lights, then.”

He smiled. “Definitely. Do not ever follow the lights.”
