Hey Everyone!! 😊
This post was inspired by an incident I witnessed at a coffee shop a couple months ago. But I've noticed it's an ongoing problem, so I figured it would make sense to post it now.
Just a general reminder:
People in service jobs are people.
It is okay -- in fact, it's strongly preferred -- that you treat them like human beings. That means it would be nice for you to smile and say hello before you give them your order, show a little patience and understanding if they are experiencing technical difficulties and still doing their best to serve you, and basically just use the same common courtesy that you would, or should, use when interacting with any other human being.
It also means that you should not yell, curse, or otherwise be abusive towards them, throw a tantrum like a cranky two-year-old over minor disappointments, or demand they magically produce items they simply do not have in stock at that particular moment. Seriously, after this past year, haven't we all realized by now how much we need and depend on the people in service jobs? At the very least, can't we all agree that they deserve to be treated with basic manners? Really, people, don't be an ass.
The people working in service jobs are not there to be a punching bag because you're in a bad mood. If you need a target, go to a gym and spend some time with the heavy bag or go home and scrub your bathroom. Those stubborn grout stains are a perfect outlet for all your frustrations. But treat the human beings who are only trying to help you with the basic dignity and respect you would want to be treated with.
Peace!
