Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!

I'm back with another video that I think it's important to share. This is from Lee Camp's Redacted Tonight show and it discusses something that almost no one is talking about. If you've followed my blog for a while, you may remember a post I did several months ago, Shades Of 1984?  Well, now it's no longer a possibility. Thanks to our elected leaders, including President Obama, it has now become fact. And I don't know about you, but I think it's scary as fuck. Granted, Lee Camp is a satirist, and a gifted one, but even though his show is a comedy show, he still discusses real news topics. Take a look at the video and see if you agree that this does not bode well for the future of the First Amendment.

#NewRelease #Announcement: #Sex, #Blood, Rock ‘N’ Roll, and Vampyr By KM McFarland!

It’s finally here. Today is release day for Sex, Blood, Rock ‘N’ Roll, and Vampyr (Book 1 of The Bloodline Trilogy). The book is now available in digital and paperback.

About the Book:

West Side’s front man and lead singer, Quinn Forrester, and the band’s lead guitarist, Jeff West, were like brothers, so when Quinn mysteriously disappeared in 1989, Jeff suspected foul play. With no evidence to back up his suspicions, Jeff was not able to convince the authorities. The truth is, Quinn was turned into a vampire that night and lives in secret in the dark shadows of New Orleans.

Years later when Quinn and his daughter, Nadia, formed a night club act, Quinn stepped back into the local spotlight. Vampires don’t age as mortals do, so in an effort to explain that, Quinn reinvented himself as his son.

Twenty-five years after Quinn’s sudden unexplained departure from the band, the opening of an art gallery brings Jeff West to New Orleans. A beautiful artist, Quinn’s lookalike son, a vampire tour and a series of events send Jeff on the path to finally discovering the shocking truth about what happened to Quinn.

Here’s a Look Inside the Book:

Randi and Quinn looked at each other recalling their earlier discussion about adding a little spice to their hunt.
“Did you hear that?” she asked.
“I did,” he said, wondering what was going on in his wife’s mind.
“What do you think? She’s obviously vampire friendly,” said Randi playing with her hair.
Quinn noticed her pretty face, long silky red hair, perfect breasts, and drop-dead body. He raised his brows and said, “She’s hot, babe. Honey, are you sure you want to do this? We don’t have to. It’s your call.”
The corners of her lips turned up. “Yes.”
He placed his hand over hers and said, “I love you. I don’t want you to do this because you think it’s what I want. I only want you to do it if it’s what you want. It doesn’t matter to me either way.”
She smiled and rested her other hand on his. “It is what I want. I want to experience this with you.”
He shook his head and smiled at her. “Then go for it.”
She winked at Quinn as she got up from the table and stepped behind the bar. Quinn got up and took a seat at the bar three stools down from the stunning redhead. The girl noticed him and looked his way flashing him a flirty smile. She was aware of his bedroom eyes grazing over her.
Randi eased her way over to her and said, “Hi, I’m Randi.”
The girl sipped her drink. Her smoky green eyes looked up, and she smiled. “Hello, Randi, I’m Riley.”
“Local or tourist?” asked Randi.
“Business. I’m an artist, and I’m here for the unveiling of a painting.” Riley glanced over at Quinn subtly licking her full glossed lips. She turned back to Randi and motioned to Quinn. “What a hottie.”
“Yes, he is,” said Randi with a smile. “That’s one of the many reasons I married him.”
Shit, thought Riley biting her lower lip. She shrugged her shoulders and attempted to laugh. “Oh, no. I’m sorry. Isn’t that always the way. The hot ones are always taken or gay.”
Randi laughed and said, “His name’s Quinn. He owns the place. Since you can’t have my man, how about another drink? It’s on the house.”
“Sure. Thanks, Randi.”
Randi made her a fresh vodka martini and set it in front of her.
Riley sipped and raised her glass with a smile. “This is great, Randi. You’re quite a mixologist.”
“Thank you.” Randi leaned in close to Riley and whispered, “Are you planning to scout the alley tonight for a vampire to feast on your blood?”
Riley looked at her wondering why she would ask such a question. Unaware Randi was using her preternatural power of hypnosis on her to get the truth; she said, “If I thought those rumors were true, I probably would.”
Her words were music to Randi’s ears. She reached out and touched Riley’s hand. Her bright blue eyes sparkled as she said, “You know they’re true, don’t you?”
Riley realized Randi’s body temperature was way below normal for a human, and her mind began to make a connection. She looked into her eyes and asked, “Is your husband as cold as you are?”
“Even colder,” said Randi moving in closer. “You know what warms us. If you’re interested in making a donation, I don’t mind sharing my hot husband, but it’s a one-time thing, and I have to be there. It’s our rules.”

#NowAvailable On #KindleUnlimited: #Illusional #Reality By Katrina Kantas!

Hey Everyone!!

The fabulous Karina Kantas would like you all to know that her amazing urban fantasy romance, Illusional Reality, is now available for FREE through Kindle Unlimited!  Here's the description:

Nobody expects to stare death in the face only to find out your entire life is a lie. Rescued by Salco, marketing executive Becky finds herself in an unknown magical world filed with happy people that try to forget their land is on the brink of destruction.

Becky will soon learn that her arrival is no accident. If learning that she is Thya, the heir of the enchanting land isn’t enough, she’s then told that an Oracle prophesied that she will save the gentle Tsinians from slavery and domination by Darthorn, the Warlord of Senx.

It is at a festival where she is introduced to the Tsinian council and her kinsmen, that she learns the whole truth. The council are so certain that a union between Darthorn’s son, Kovon and Thya will create peace between the two lands. However, Darthorn has plans for Tsinia as does Kovon for Thya and neither are good.
Although her future has been planned and if she is to save Tsinia she must marry Kovon, Thya gives her heart to another. A love that is forbidden and dangerous.
Illusional Reality is a story about hope, courage, love and sacrifice.

And here's my review for Illusional Reality:
Illusional Reality is a relatively quick read that packs a surprising amount of action into a not overly lengthy book. It is more a fantasy/adventure than a romance although there are fun romantic interludes throughout the book and an underlying romantic storyline as well. It is quick-moving and the various peoples are well-described. Magic, war, and love all combine to make an interesting and pleasant read.

Sound interesting? Awesome! Grab your copy here:

#APC #Spotlight: Chronicles Of The Otherworld: Season 1 By A. S. Aramiru!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

Today, I've got A.S. Aramiru in my APC spotlight!  A.S. is an active and supportive member of  the  Authors-Professional Co-op Facebook group and his sci-fi fantasy novel, Chronicles of the Otherworld: Season 1, looks interesting! Here's the description:
The world is for those who were born to conquer it. They were just born elsewhere.
A chosen few found themselves in another world where magic is real.
Deemed the Otherworlders by the inhabitants of this foreign realm, the Otherworlders were granted powers that ascended them beyond even what this dark world of beasts and sorcery would consider normal.
With no explanation or purpose for why they were given such gifts, some Otherworlders decided to treat the world as their playground…
Some searched for their place…
…While others let their ambitions pave their paths.
Neither this world’s salvation or doom, nor protectors or foes, nevertheless their presence will irreversibly rewrite the fate of the Otherworld.
If you think it sounds as intriguing as I do, you can grab your copy here:

Thank you all so much for stopping by! Happy reading! :-)

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 443

Hey Everyone! :-)

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Four-Hundred-Forty-Three:
Today, my hominid-servant introduced a new ritual that is apparently associated with the decorated dead tree she seems to have such affection for. When she arose from her sleeping platform, she found me where I was sitting on the ledge by one of the portals deeply engaged in recording the behavior of the small, flying avians that seem to have claimed the territory immediately outside my domicile. With no regard for my studies, my hominid-servant plucked me from the ledge and deposited me on the floor next to the dead tree.

This confused me because, until this time, she had gone to great lengths to dissuade me from approaching the tree. She sat beside me on the floor and, once settled, she pulled one of the decorated boxes she had placed around the tree into her lap. Mystified by the odd behavior, I chose to remain and observe rather than return to documenting the activities of the avians.

After she called the canid to joins us, my hominid-servant launched into a lengthy speech about the current position of this planet in its revolution around the local star and how special it is, though she failed to explain why this particular point in the orbit is so important. She then told us that she was grateful to have us both in her life, which is understandable. After all, any hominid fortunate enough to be assigned to a DPCIL agent should feel grateful, though why such gratitude is associated with the planetary rotation escapes me. And she said that she looked forward to seeing what we thought of the gifts she had gotten for us. At this point, my curiosity was piqued and I couldn't wait to see what my hominid-servant would do next.

She tore the decorations from the box, which irritated me because had I done the same she would have reacted badly, and then opened it to reveal more of the objects that she ceremoniously presents to me on occasion. However, this presentation involved even more fanfare than usual, which I still don't understand because the objects seem indistinguishable from her previous presentations. Then, with the same amount of ceremony, my hominid servant opened another box with several varieties of eatables I have not previously sampled. All of them are contained within packaging that I am unable to penetrate without assistance, however they all smell delectable and the contents of the one package she did open were delicious.

I thought that this ceremony was intended to express her gratitude for my indulgence of her attachment to the dead tree, but then she opened a third box. This one contained the intoxicating herb she has drugged me with in the past. As before, I was unable to resist its allure and soon found myself engaging in utterly undignified behavior that I only partly remember now. Also, as with previous encounters with this drug, it wasn't long before I was forced into a deep and extended slumber in order to recover from its effects, so I did not see if the canid was presented with offerings as well or if the dubious honor was reserved for me.

At this point, I am not certain what my hominid-servant's purpose was with this ceremony, but I hope it will not be repeated. While the objects and food are welcome, the herb is clearly dangerous and my exposure to it should be limited. The dead tree remains in the domicile, though the foot coverings no longer hang from the wall, so I am not certain what my hominid-servant's next move will be. I will remain on guard and include any further behavioral anomalies in my reports.

Oh my! Hominids do engage in some bizarre behavior at times, don't they? You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. ;-)  Happy reading, everyone!

Can I Say That?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

Today, I'd like to talk about something that there seems to be a lot of confusion about, the free speech protections offered by the First Amendment. See, I've been hearing a lot of people complaining lately that others are infringing on their rights to free speech, and it seems to me that many of those who complain the loudest seem to have the most confusion about what those rights actually are.

For once, this isn't directed at any particular political leaning. I've seen the same problem on both sides of the aisle. But I thought it might help if I tried to clear the matter up a bit. I'm not a lawyer, but then one doesn't really need to be to understand this most basic of rights. But if you disagree with me, I'd be interested to hear your reasoning in the comments. Okay, ready? Here we go. ;-)

First, and most important, the only thing the First Amendment protects you from is government interference with your right to speak your mind freely. It does not protect you from your employer, your neighbor, or anyone else. That's not to say that other people may physically assault you for speaking your mind, they certainly may not, but not because of the First Amendment. There are other laws that prohibit physical violence and assault, and if a person breaks those laws they are likely to suffer the consequences of doing so. But those laws have nothing to do with the First Amendment.

No, the only thing the First Amendment protects your speech from is the government. That means that on public property you may speak your mind, so long as you are not violating any other laws, and you may not be prohibited from speaking or arrested for doing so.  It does not mean that your neighbor, or a store owner, is required to allow you to speak on their privately owned property. It also does not mean that Facebook or Twitter or any other social media company is required to allow you to use their platform to voice your opinion.

Now, I personally believe that those companies shouldn't engage in deciding which voices may be heard on their platforms and which may not. Because, in my opinion, social media is more a public than private space and the companies depend on an infrastructure that was developed publicly.  But the platforms are privately owned, and so may be controlled by the entities that own them. And my opinions are not the law.

So, if any individual or company tells you that you may not speak your mind on their private property, they are not violating your First Amendment rights. It is only the government that may not interfere, and then only on public property or on private property that you have permission from the owner to speak on. And there are limits to what you may say, though those limits are intentionally restricted to circumstances when what you say, or the manner in which you say it, can be reasonably expected to put the lives and/or safety of other people in serious jeopardy.

For instance, the classic example is yelling, "Fire!" in a crowded building when there is no fire. Such an action is not protected under the First Amendment because there is a high probability that people will be injured or killed in the ensuing panic. Another example would be if you threatened to physically harm another person. That last is a bit more of a gray area, since there are any number of jokes or common expressions that depend on making "threats" that the speaker clearly has no intention of carrying out. In order to bring criminal charges, the government would have to be able to make the case that the threat was credible and had intent behind it. But that's why the court system exists. And short of those extreme circumstances, the government may not interfere with your ability to speak your mind.

However, the First Amendment does not guarantee you an audience.  Not in any way, shape, or form. There seems to be some confusion about this, because I've heard quite a few people complain that others are not respecting their First Amendment rights because they won't listen to them. Umm...nope, sorry. That's not how it works.

I mean, I'm an author. There are times that I wish others were required to pay attention to my work. It would certainly help my book sales. But that's simply not the case. The First Amendment guarantees the government may not interfere with your right to speak, it doesn't say anything about compelling other people to listen. If you want others to give you their attention, you're going to have to say something interesting enough to attract it. Sorry.

Also, the First Amendment does not guarantee that you may speak without fear of criticism. Sorry, my friends, the only "safe space" for your words is the one between your ears. If you don't want to be criticized for speaking, I'm afraid you'll need to keep your mouth shut and your thoughts to yourself.  If you put your ideas and opinions out into the world, the world will judge them and may let you know, vociferously at times, whether or not it is in agreement with you. Why? Because other people have the same right to speak that you do.

And, what's more, you consented to being criticized by opening your mouth and exposing your thoughts to the public. Sometimes, having your words shredded is the price of admission for speaking. It's not always a pleasant feeling, as I'm perfectly well aware. If you don't believe me, take a look at some of the reviews people have left for my books. There is more than one that is rather harsh, but that's what happens when everyone has the right to speak their mind freely.

No matter what you say or how you say it, you're never going to please everyone. Some people will agree with you and some won't. Some from both extremes will let you know what they think. And they have the right to do that, the same as you had the right to speak to begin with.

The good news? You don't have to just stand there and take it. You have the right to speak in turn and criticize their ideas and the way they expressed them. Why? Because the First Amendment guarantees you the right to speak. Or, you may choose to ignore them and walk away, instead. Why? Because the First Amendment does not guarantee them an audience either.

See, that's how things work when everyone has the same rights as everyone else. The upside is that you get to say what you want, and the government can't stop or punish you. The downside is that everyone else can do the same, even people you disagree with so strongly that you would spend your entire life fighting against what they promote. But that's also an upside, because any right that's taken away from others can also be taken away from you.

So, to recap. Yes, the First Amendment does guarantee that the government may not prevent you from or punish you for speaking, except under very limited and well-defined circumstances. No, the First Amendment does not require that others listen to you when you speak. No, if someone disagrees with you and criticizes you, they are not violating your First Amendment rights. And, no, the owner of private property is not under any obligation to allow your speech on their property.  I hope that helps clear things up. :-)

Peace!
