Storm Portal (Quantum Touch Book 1) by Michael R. Stern:
Every history teacher's dream...or is it a nightmare? Fritz Russell, struggling history teacher, suddenly finds himself in possession of a unique means to capture the interest of his students. After being struck by lightning, he gains the ability to shift through time and take those near him with him. The first time he does this, he takes a couple of classes of students back to chat with Civil War General, Robert E. Lee, and the kids are suitably impressed. The catch, as Mr. Russell discovers, it that he can't control where or when these time shifts occur. So, the next time he takes his students on an impromptu class trip, the surprise they get is something a bit less pleasant than a chat with a famous historical figure. Add to that all the attention he's suddenly getting from the government, and Mr. Russell knows he needs to figure out what's going on soon...before it's too late for him.
I really enjoyed this book. Normally, I don't really care for time-travel stories because all the logical inconsistencies they inevitably create bug my OCD, but Mr. Stern keeps the story moving and doesn't get too technical or so involved in chasing down all the threads of change that I was unable to maintain my suspension of disbelief. Also, it's clear that Mr. Stern is a history buff, and I found the historical snippets both informative and the discussion around them relevant to our times. Overall, five stars, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
