#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 1135

Hey Everyone! :-)

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Eleven-Hundred-Thirty-Five:
The weather for the part of this planet where I am stationed has, once again, turned warmer as the planetary tilt results in a slightly closer proximity to the local star during this portion of the planet’s revolution around it. And, as is her habit, for reasons unknown, my hominid-servant has taken this as a signal to engage in nesting activities that have a severe disrupting effect on every resident of my domicile. From past experience, I understand that this cyclical inconvenience will result in a cleaner, better-organized domicile for my compatriots and myself; however, the disturbance to routine is not something I’m able to overlook.

However, one thing about this iteration of my hominid-servant’s ritual does interest me. I look forward to seeing how the juvenile felid will react to having his cache of baubles disturbed. Will he take exception to my hominid-servant’s encroachment into the territory he has claimed? Or will he concede to the inevitable and allow her to complete her ritual without resistance? If he does resist, will she accommodate his demands? Or will she simply ignore his protests and carry on with her intentions?

I look forward to seeing if this turns into a battle of wills and, if so, whose will will be the stronger. If my young protégé does succeed in forcing my hominid-servant to alter her behavior, I may be able to copy whatever strategy he uses to advance my own agenda. As always, I will report back on any further developments.

Hmmm... This may be interesting. ;-) You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. ;-) Happy reading, everyone!

Dark Days And The Quintessential American Hero...

Hey Everyone!

This is a little something I wrote on Facebook about a year ago, but it seems particularly relevant now, so I thought I'd share it here. Maybe it will give you something to think about. Peace!

You know, the more I read about the labor movement of the early 20th century, the more I realize we're living in the 21st-century version of those times. Hell, we've even got our own Franklin Delano Sanders. Unfortunately, we allowed the modern-day robber-barons to sabotage his campaign again, so it doesn't look like we'll get him into the White House.

It's a shame and a crime this topic gets no more than a passing mention in school history classes. There was so much real-life heroism in those labor leaders, I see it reflected in some of the voices that captured the national attention in recent years. Looking back through the lens of history, it seems like a lot of the victories happened because someone had enough and convinced enough others who'd had enough to stand with them against the power structure. And then they all just put one foot in front of the other and kept doing that, refusing to give up or give in, until they got what they needed.

But, then, isn't that the story of the quintessential American hero? Hell, I've seen metaphorical versions of similar stories made into superhero movies. Only they weren't superheroes; they were just regular people, no different from me and thee.

Which begs the question, how bad does it have to get? At what point will enough people say enough and draw their line in the sand? When will we find the spines our grandparents and great grandparents found and say, "No more!" And how bad will it be before we get to that point?

Quick Pesto #Pasta #Recipe!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

This is a really quick pasta dish that's perfect for spring. Enjoy! :-)

Ingredients:
6 cups angel hair spaghetti cooked and drained
4 12oz cans chickpeas drained
2 cups pistacio nuts shelled
4 cups fresh basil leaves
3 cups pecorino romano shredded
4 large tomatoes chopped
1 large onion chopped
8 cloves garlic minced
4 tbsp red pepper flakes (optional)
2 cups olive oil
2 cups white wine (your choice)
Salt and pepper to taste

Add the nuts, basil, 2 cups of shredded cheese, 5 cloves of garlic, and salt and pepper to taste to a food processor and turn on high. As the ingredients are being processed, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until the consistency is sauce-like. Turn off the food processor and set the pesto aside.

In a large skillet, add the rest of the olive oil and the onion and cook until the onion softens and becomes translucent. Add the tomatoes, remaining garlic, pepper flakes (optional), wine, and chickpeas and cook until the wine bubbles and starts to reduce. Add the pesto and stir to combine and heat (you can add a little water if the sauce becomes too thick). Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Stir in the pasta, toss to coat, and sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top. Serve warm with a side of crusty bread.

Buon appetito!

Gratitude For Small Favors...

Hey Everyone!! :-)

Here's a little bit more of the third installment in the Petri Dish Chronicles! As always, the disclaimer is that this is a draft and, as such, it's unedited and likely full of errors and is subject to revision, revamping, and being completely scrapped and rewritten. But, with that in mind, I'm reasonably satisfied with the basics of it, at least at the moment, or I wouldn't have bothered posting it. Enjoy! :-)

Excerpt from the third Petri Dish book:
Sighing, Petri closed her eyes as she laid back in the chair the Arcanum had prepared for her. Looking to either side of her, she met first Chessie’s and then Daji's worried gazes. The Paka had been surprisingly subdued during her negotiations, and hadn’t even uttered any complaints as their “hosts" had prepared them for their trip into the rainbow. She wondered if he was planning to somehow sabotage her efforts once they were in. Some sort of flashy act of self-sacrifice wouldn’t surprise her, given Daji’s extreme disapproval of her cooperation with the Arcanum.

That was actually one of the things she had extracted promises from both Vlad and the Arcanum about. If Daji did anything to hinder or disrupt her mission, they would intercept and contain him, but they would not harm him. And he would be returned to his body once she was successful.

She turned her gaze to the chair itself. It was actually more a sophisticated life-support device than a chair. It had been designed to maintain and support humanoid lifeforms for an extended period of physical inactivity. The seat and back of the chair articulated independently from each other and from the arms and attached supports for the legs. In addition, the entire surface of the structure contained a free-flowing gel-like substance that could be channeled so that no part of the body was in constant contact with the chair. Petri had been informed that all of these would be manipulated on a regular basis to avoid pressure wounds and ensure uncompromised circulation. In addition, faint electrical pulses would be sent at intervals into the voluntary muscles in their bodies to minimize atrophy and further promote blood flow.

The chairs also included monitoring equipment that would ensure the glucose and electrolyte balance in their bodies remained steady by making adjustments as necessary through intravenous feeding and hydration. Petri still wasn’t happy with the way the Arcanum were coercing her into what she regarded as an impossible mission, but she had to give them credit for having put a lot of thought into keeping her friends and her alive and healthy for as long as possible.

#APC #Spotlight: The Corner Booth (A Carras Enterprise Novel Book 1) By Kelly Ilebode!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I've got Kelly Oliver Ilebode in my APC spotlight, today! Kelly is an active and supportive member of the  Authors-Professional Co-op Facebook group and her multicultural, interracial, contemporary romance novel, The Corner Booth, looks great! Here's the description:
Cassandra Oliver, a small town girl with big dreams, left Vermont with nothing but hope for a better future and a job waiting for her as a nanny in Boston. She knew this move would be life changing in so many ways. Having spent her childhood shuttled from one family to another; every decision made for her - Cassie made a promise to herself, that when she was on her own, she would be the one in control and she would allow no one to make her think differently.

“My happiness does not come from how much is in my bank account; it is the arms that hold me at night that make me far richer than anyone I know.”

For Sakis Carras, one of the most powerful, wealthiest and dangerous men on the East Coast, the words spoken by his friend haunted him. His successful business empire, which he started from the ground up, was everything he had worked so hard for and he was living the American Dream. Sakis controlled his empire with no apologies or regrets - until he met Cassandra. Letting her into his life, Sakis realized quickly that he had met his match in every way and he learned the hard way that she could not be so easily controlled.

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 1127

Hey Everyone! :-)

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Eleven-Hundred-Twenty-Seven:
I believe this will be the final installment of my report regarding my recent attempt at escaping the confines of my domicile. I apologize that it has turned into such a saga, but I’m certain you understand my reaction given the facts of the case.

To continue, as I previously explained, I was rather distraught at both my failure and the subsequent treatment I received from my hominid-servant. This is an emotional state that was only exacerbated by the fact that, after providing edible delicacies to the other quadrupedal residents of my domicile but denying them to me, my hominid-servant continued her castigation of me for what she termed “antisocial behavior,” and forced me to endure a scathing analysis of how my actions amounted to "picking on the other animals” while I was held as a captive audience. At one point, she even referred to me as a “bully!"

My hominid-servant went on to explain that she “expects me to know better." A statement that utterly baffled me as it is she who is obstructing vital research!

Ultimately, my hominid-servant refused to release me from the punishment box until she had cleaned up all of the shards of broken objects that resulted from my knocking them from the horizontal platform in order to use the resulting noise as a distraction. I must admit, the humiliation of this experience still stings, and I am utterly exhausted by the burden of reliving it. I believe, now that I have finally completed my report, that I will withdraw and rest before again applying myself to devising a solution to my hominid-servant's interference with my research.

*sigh* The things a dedicated DPCIL Agent is forced to put up with. ;-) You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. ;-) Happy reading, everyone!

Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with another video I wanted to share. So naturally, the fact that the presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, is a rapist is no longer in the news cycle, so I can't share any stories about that with you. But I wanted to make sure you all remember, anyway. ;-) However, there are certainly other things in the news that I thought people should know about, so I'm sharing this video. I hope it provides you with some useful information. Peace!

#May2020 #IndieBooksBeSeen #Indie #Author #Books #Monthly #BookReview!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

It's the 18th again, so time for my #IndieBooksBeSeen monthly indie author book review!! Enjoy! :-)

Dauntless by Tom Atwood Jr.:

Imagine losing a parent and then losing everything you ever thought you knew about the world around you all in one blow. That's what happens to Kacey Alexander when she opens a chest she received as part of her inheritance and discovers her mother was a Sentinel! Then the race is on to see if she can learn enough to take up the mantle left by her mother and face down the evil that's trying to destroy her city. Will Kacey be up to the challenge? You'll have to read to find out!

This is a fun YA urban fantasy. It was a little confusing at first because there's a lot of backstory that the reader doesn't know, but it makes sense because the main character doesn't know it either, and part of the story is accompanying her on her journey as she finds the answers to all the questions swirling around the reader's mind about her world. The characters are well-developed and read like "real" people and not caricatures. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. Five stars.

The Battle For Change...

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I thought I'd share another peek at Alyce's analysis of our situation here in the US for you to start your weekend off with. Enjoy!

Excerpt from Answers From Alyce:
I shrugged. "I don't know. I hope not. But this," I pointed at where the robots dressed like police wielded their batons and shields and faced off against the robots dressed like protestors, "just makes the people who are disenfranchised more desperate. If the government won't give people room to express their discontent peacefully, then it's pretty much guaranteed they'll do so less than peacefully. That's what people who are angry, frustrated, and scared do. And that's how revolutionary wars get started."

"Might that be for the best?" asked Yax. "Wouldn't it allow your people to restructure your political system into something that works for more people?"

I shook my head. "No. I don't think it would be for the best; I think it would be a disaster. Violent, undirected change? Who knows what we might end up with? Who knows if the disenfranchised would even win that war? Yes, there're more of us. But the people in power are the ones with the fancy weapons and the trained military. The underdog rebels always win in the movies, but things don't always work out that way in real life. In reality, the government calls those who take up arms against it 'terrorists' and it wages a propaganda war against them and villainizes them in public opinion before exterminating them while the rest of the world sighs in relief. And then it passes laws to 'protect the public' that makes it even harder to express dissent. We might end up with something far worse than what we have now. And, no matter who won or whether or not the government we ended up with was better or worse, a lot of innocent people would be dead. I hope with all my being that we can be smarter than that."

Yax nodded. "That makes sense. Though, I'm not sure what means that leaves you with for effecting change."

I gestured at the exhibit again. "This. Eventually."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, this will work, eventually, if the protestors are persistent in both their protest and their non-violence. When videos of police beating up unarmed, non-violent citizens go viral on the internet, it makes for a far better narrative with regard to public opinion than if the government is able to post videos of protestors destroying property or hurting people."

"Ah," said Squid-boy. "I see. The protestors will publicize examples of abuse by your law enforcement in an attempt to sway the opinions of enough people that eventually your government will not be able to ignore the matter or refuse to fix it."

I nodded. "Yes. Though, the government will still use misdirection and disingenuousness to attempt to obfuscate the matter."

"That is when they'll pretend that the problem is something other than what it actually is, like you said before," said Yax.

"Yes. Or they'll try to blame the victims or create a lot of hoopla about some other issue to try to distract everyone. They have a lot of methods for deceiving people, and the public tends to have a short attention span. That's why it's such a battle to get any meaningful change. But it has happened before, so with hard work and persistence we can make it happen again."

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 1126

Hey Everyone! :-)

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Eleven-Hundred-Twenty-Six:
Greetings. I will, once again, attempt to complete my report on the debacle that resulted from my latest attempt to skirt my hominid-servant’s stricture against my leaving my domicile to engage in the research that is so crucial to the successful completion of my mission. As I last reported, my hominid-servant restored order rather quickly simply by virtue of the fact that she has the capacity to be louder than any of the rest of us, when she so chooses.

Once the others had quieted and departed, my hominid-servant focused her attention on me and chased me through my domicile with a rolled-up periodical making horrific threats against my person. I did my best to evade her, but being confined in my domicile limits my mobility rather significantly. It didn’t take long for my hominid-servant to corner and capture me, and I was hesitant to further escalate the situation by deploying the C.L.A.W.S. since, though she restrained me, she did not actually attempt to do me harm.

What she did do was confine me in the box she uses for punishment and give me what I’m sure she considered to be a rather stern lecture. Which is something that was both infuriating and humiliating to endure, since it is her behavior that’s deserving of censure, not my own. Then, to add insult to injury, she distributed edible delicacies to the other quadrupedal residents of my domicile, apparently, in an effort to soothe them. I believe it goes without saying that none of these treats were offered to me, despite the fact that I was the one most in need of consoling.

In fact, I find myself, once again, overcome at just the memory of the injustice. As the remainder of my report is simply an analysis of my hominid-servant's obtuseness, and my own emotional reaction, I believe it can wait until I have regained some composure. Perhaps a little more time between me and the events in question will lessen the sting.

Ugh! The inhumanity! ;-) You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. ;-) Happy reading, everyone!

What Powers The Machine...

Hey Everyone!

As often happens, I wrote a post on Facebook a couple months ago -- in this case at the end of March, so about a month and a half ago -- but didn't have the opportunity to post it here until now. Since I'm writing this way ahead of time, I'm not sure what state the country or the pandemic will be in when it goes live, but I thought I'd share it anyway because I think it's something that people might want to consider in the future, if not right at the moment. Peace!

All those oligarchs whining about how we peasants don't want to sacrifice our lives on the altar of their stock portfolios should really study up on history. Because a sudden decrease in the availability of labor, say due to the premature deaths of a bunch of people from disease, can have sweeping consequences for a society. For instance The Plague in Europe is widely credited for shifting society from a feudalistic paradigm and initiating the changes that directly led to the Renaissance period and, later, the Enlightenment. Because there weren't enough people to do all the work, so those in power had to offer more to get the labor they needed.

Granted, the Black Death had something like between a 30% to a 75% mortality rate -- it's hard to know exactly because record keeping kind of sucked and precision diagnoses didn't really exist, at the time -- which COVID-19 does not have. But even still, it's a historical precedent that anyone profiting under the current system would do well to consider before allowing their short-sighted greed to kill the goose that's laying the golden eggs.

And the near-panic the establishment is reacting with to the prospect of much of the workforce staying home for a few weeks is something those of us who comprise that workforce should take heed of. We, The People, have power. And it's power that can't be taken from us because it's intrinsic to the service we provide society. We need only the will to wield it. Because, though our power can't be taken from us through force, without the will to bring that power to bear, we surrender our power without a fight. And that makes us no more than lambs being led to the slaughter.

Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with another video I wanted to share. I wanted to share another video reminding everyone that Biden is a rapist because the corporate media is bound and determined not to talk about that, but this is important too. So, I'll just remind you all now, Biden is a rapist, Democrats who are attacking Tara Reade are hypocrites, but you should still take a few minutes to watch this video because there are other terrible things happening in this country at the same time. Peace!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

This is another great recipe for those nights when you're looking for a quick meal with little fuss. Enjoy! :-)

4 portabello mushrooms washed
8 cherry tomatoes halved
1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
1/2 cup fresh basil chopped

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Day Eleven-Hundred-Twenty-Five:
I have spent some time in meditation and believe I am now capable of continuing the description of events that occurred during my latest attempt at furthering the research that comprises the core aim of my mission. As I last explained, I had gone to quite a bit of trouble to create a situation of maximal chaos to distract my hominid-servant, so that I would be able to escape the confines of my domicile. Unfortunately, in one of her rare displays of shrewdness, my hominid-servant realized my plan before I was able to bypass the blockage of creatures congregated at the door to my domicile.

As I attempted to unobtrusively make my way through the open door, my hominid-servant spotted me and shut the door in my face just as I sprinted to dash through it, causing me to bump my nose. She then proceeded to yell at the canid, the juvenile felid, and me! The other two quadripedal residents of my domicile seemed subdued by her chastisement, as they then slunk off to other parts of my domicile to compose themselves. But, again, in an unusual show of sagacity, my hominid-servant correctly identified me as the instigator of the situation.

There is more to share; however, I hear my hominid-servant approaching, and I believe she is still rather piqued with me. I will act on the theory that, at least in this circumstance, discretion is the better part of valor and complete this report at a later time.

Oh, my! It seems poor Thoth may be in the dog house.. ;-) You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. ;-) Happy reading, everyone!
