It All Ties Back To Corruption...

Hey Everyone!! 😊

It's been a little while since we've heard from Alyce, and I think the pandemic has highlighted even more just how much a problem this is, so here's a little glimpse at the inner workings of the US healthcare system. Enjoy... 😉

Excerpt from Answers from Alyce:
Nodding, the taller alien gestured for me to continue.

"First of all, I'm not going to try to justify why medical providers sometimes are more concerned with a patient's ability to pay than they are with treating the patient's medical issues, but I will try to explain it. There are a lot of expenses involved in practicing medicine in the United States. If you're talking about individual doctors, they have to complete, and pay for, more than a decade's worth of higher education before they can take the tests that allow them to earn their medical licenses. Many of them have tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars in education loans they have to pay off."

"Wait a moment," interrupted Squid-boy. "Are you saying that your society requires that healers pay for their own training? That you don't train your healers as an investment in ensuring that your people have access to medical care when they need it?"

I nodded. "Yep. That's what I'm saying. People who want to become doctors have to find a way to pay for their education themselves. Some are able to get grants or scholarships, but a lot of them have to either pay cash or take out loans to pay for it. And those loans charge interest, so it can be incredibly expensive to become a doctor."

"That's barbaric!"

"Well, sugar, I can't say that I disagree with you. But that's the way it is. And when a doctor has the banks breathing down their neck wanting their loan payments, you can see why they might be a tad anxious to make sure the patients they treat are able to pay them."

"Yes. Though, I still maintain that it's an uncivilized way of doing things."

"True. But that doesn't change the reality. And you also have to consider that if a doctor owns their own practice, they also have to pay the salaries of all their nurses and other staff, they have to pay someone to do their billing for them, they have to pay for all the medical supplies and medications they use, which aren't cheap, and they have to pay for utilities and clerical supplies. Probably a cleaning service, as well. So, doctors really do need to make sure that they get paid for their services."

"Why is billing a separate expense? Why don't patients simply pay for their treatment at the time of service?" asked Yax.

"Well, sugar, that gets into insurance, which I'll get to later. And, speaking of insurance, it's not just medical insurance doctors have to deal with. They also have to have malpractice insurance and insurance on the building where they practice and its contents, too. It all adds up. And hospitals have all those expenses plus additional administrative expenses and the expenses associated with maintaining sterile operating rooms and the specialized staff that goes along with them. And the supplies and equipment hospitals need are also more specialized, and expensive, than what is used in a regular doctor's office. Plus, they have to pay the doctors, too."

"Will you explain about the insurance now?"

I snorted. "Sure. Like I said, there are several kinds. There's insurance on the building and the contents of the building, in case something happens, like a fire or flood, that destroys the property and equipment. There's liability insurance, in case someone does something like slip and fall and hurt themselves on the premises. There's malpractice insurance, in case a doctor makes a mistake that injures a patient or results in a patient not receiving the correct treatment and suffering injury as a result. These are all insurances that doctors and hospitals have to carry and pay for."

"So, they pay money to a company each month and that company guarantees to pay if anything happens that applies to the type of insurance they provide?"

I nodded. "Yes, though, like I said, in theory. Insurance companies only make money if they don't have to pay out too much, so they try not to pay if they can get away with it."

"How do they do that?"

"It depends on the type of insurance. Most types of insurance have limits on the payout, so the insurance company won't pay anything above that limit. Aside from that, they'll try to find excuses for why they shouldn't have to pay."

"What kind of excuses?"

"Again, it depends on what kind of insurance we're talking about. For medical insurance, which is supposed to pay for medical treatment if the insured person gets sick or hurt, there are a few different ways insurance companies try to get away with not paying. For example, if a doctor prescribes a certain medication for a person, their insurance company might refuse to pay because they have decided that medication won't be covered. So, the patient then has to either get their doctor to prescribe something else that is covered or pay for the medication themselves."

"What if the medication that isn't covered is the only medication that will meet the patient's needs?"

I shrugged. "They might be able to get the insurance company to pay for it if they argue the case and get their doctor to back them up, but they might not. And even if they do, they usually end up having to pay a higher price for that medication than they would for a medication that was covered."

"Wait a moment, I'm confused. If they successfully make their case that the medication should be covered, why does the patient have to pay anything for it? Doesn't that mean the insurance company will pay?"

"Ah, well, that's one of their other tricks. Most medical insurance policies have what are called 'deductibles' and 'copays'. The insurance doesn't pay for anything until the patient has paid out enough money to cover their deductible, which is usually thousands of dollars, for the year. And even after the insurance company starts to pay, they only pay for a percentage of the costs. The rest of the costs have to be paid for by the patient. That's what's called a 'copay'."

"And patients have to deal with all of this while they are sick or injured, possibly fighting for their lives?"

"I'm afraid so, sugar."

"I have to agree with Paxtiguantialablingondintalblinganham, your system for healthcare is barbaric."

I shrugged. "I won't argue with you. It used to be worse. It used to be that medical insurance companies were allowed to refuse to pay if they claimed an illness or injury had existed before the patient bought their insurance. Guess how often that claim was made?"

"From what you've described, I'd wager that it was more often than not."

I nodded. "And they also used to be allowed to set limits on how much they would pay for a patient for a year and also for their whole life. But a law was passed that made it illegal for them to do that, so they don't anymore. But there are still plenty of other tricks they use to get out of paying."

"It occurs to me that, depending on the circumstances, if one of your insurance companies can play such games long enough and prevent the patient from receiving care, the issue of their having to pay may become moot if the patient dies in the meantime," observed Squid-boy.

"Yep. That's certainly a possibility. And having a specialized staff who are trained in how to argue with insurance companies and convince them they have no choice but to pay is why doctors and hospitals have to pay for billing staff."

"And the expenses that your healthcare providers are forced to bear are the reason why patient's lives are allowed to depend on the caprices of private industry?"

I shook my head. "No. The reason that happens is because my country has allowed our healthcare system to be controlled by for-profit corporations. Since their profits are dependent on not paying for healthcare, there's a built-in perverted incentive structure that can't be overcome. As long as those corporations are allowed to continue to control our healthcare system, people will continue to die from lack of care. The expenses that providers have to cover are the reason why they sometimes are more concerned with a patient's ability to pay than they are with the patient's health status. But the reason some patients aren't able to pay is because our government has failed to prioritize ensuring that all our citizens’ healthcare needs are taken care of."

"And there's nothing that can be done about that?"

I shrugged. "There's plenty that could be done. Every other modern country on our planet has some form of guaranteed healthcare coverage through their government, which they pay for with taxes. But, so far, the politicians in my country have lacked the political will to do anything like that. Mostly, because they've been bribed by the same corporations that are currently running the healthcare system."

"Which ties back into the rampant corruption in your political system that we discussed before," said Yax.

"Yep."

"Has no one ever tried to do anything to curtail the expenses associated with providing healthcare?" asked Squid-boy.

I sighed. "Sure. The costs associated with healthcare are routinely used to justify keeping salaries low for lower-level employees in the healthcare system and for denying them many benefits."

The two aliens looked at each other. "This is a new aspect of the problem that we weren't aware of. Can you explain?"

I opened my mouth to answer when a strobe light flashed behind my eyes and a jagged piece of agony sliced through my brain. My vision went red and I felt my legs fold under me. I'm pretty sure I lost consciousness for a few seconds, because the next thing I knew, I was on the floor looking up into two faces that were clearly showing concern despite their alien features.

"What happened?"

Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with another video I wanted to share. This is already a pattern, Biden half-asses something important so as not to offend his donors, and the mainstream media pretends it's a real win when it's really just smoke and mirrors. Unfortunately, you can only piss on people's heads and tell them it's raining so many times before they catch on and call you on your bullshit. Which is exactly what will lead to the rise of fascism and Trump 2.0 being elected in a few years. But watch for yourselves and form your own opinions. Peace!

A Twist On A Classic #Recipe For The #Crockpot!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with my take on a yummy, classic dish.  I don't know about you, but one of my favorite things in the world is gravy.  Now, like other dishes, I prefer my gravy without meat. So, I played around a bit and found a way to make stroganoff, one of my favorite gravies, without beef! :-) Take a look and see what you think of this mushroom stroganoff recipe.

Ingredients:
1-2 14oz package(s) white button (whole or sliced) mushrooms cleaned
1 14oz package of baby bellas cleaned
1 14oz package of shitake mushrooms cleaned
2 medium onions chopped
2 cups vegetable stock
1/2 cup white wine
1 teaspoon rosemary
1/4 cup vegetarian worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional)
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon smoked paprika
4-5 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon butter
2-3 tablespoons of sour cream
Salt, pepper, and parsley to taste

Put all the ingredients except the sour cream and parsley in a crockpot. Turn the crockpot on high for 5-6 hours. Stir in the sour cream and parsley. Serve over egg noodles, potatoes, rice, or any other starch you enjoy.

Yep, that's it!  Another lazy cook's dream. Like most of my recipes, to be honest. If you don't have or don't like any of the types of mushrooms I listed, you can change up the mushrooms to whatever you prefer. You can also use canned mushrooms if that's what you have on hand.  Also, you can get chopped, frozen onions from a lot of grocery stores, so that might be another time saver if you don't like to chop onions.

The flavor of the frozen onions isn't quite as strong as fresh onions, and they are mushy even before cooking, but if you're in a time pinch or don't have any onions in the house they might be an option for you.  If you have the time, and you use fresh onions, you can caramelize the onions in a skillet before putting them in the crockpot. This will add more flavor and deepen the color of the stroganoff. Just put them in a skillet with the butter and olive oil and cook them until they caramelize. If you add the paprika to the onions in the skillet, it will help develop the flavor of the spice a bit. Add the garlic when the onions are almost done and then put the contents of the skillet in the crockpot and deglaze the skillet with the wine.

If you don't like alcohol or don't have any wine in the house, you can use 1/4 cup red wine vinegar instead. There are also things you can add to this stroganoff to make it richer or to get more vegetables in your diet.  I've found green, leafy vegetables tend to make broths richer, so you can add spinach, kale, or even broccoli if you'd like.  You can also add carrots for some sweetness and/or peas for color. If your stroganoff is a little runny, you can make a slurry by mixing a little cornstarch with cold water and stir that in to thicken it up.

Bon appetit! :-)

Sometimes You Need To Break Out The Big Guns... 😉

Hey Everyone! 😊

Happy Friday! Since it's the beginning of the weekend, and hopefully all the cares of the week are tucked away, I thought it might be fun to take a peek at how the Fae solve their problems. Enjoy... 😉

Excerpt from Captivated by the Winter King
A loud knock sounded at the door, making Ankou jump.  He was astonished to realize he had fallen asleep and he had no idea what time it was.  He kicked himself.  How could he have slept when his Anamchara might be in danger?  "Enter!" he called.

Tairise came through the door, speaking as ta did.  "There's news!  I think I know where she has gone."

Careful to slide the slumbering cat from his lap onto the couch, Ankou jumped to his feet.  "Where?"

Motioning the king to follow ta, Tairise led him to the lower levels of the palace.  Ta explained as they walked.  "One of the guards finally admitted to having seen the runes flare over the door he was assigned to watch yesterday.  They indicated that those who passed were residents of the castle, so he did not report the incident."

"That's against protocol!  Why did it take so long for him to come forward?"

Hesitating, Tairise tried to find a way to make it sound better.  Giving it up as a lost cause, ta just said, "He has been taking bribes to allow certain nobles to enter and exit the palace without entering a note of their passage into the record.  He is an Anthropophagi, so he could not see through the glamour and thought it was one of those who had paid him."  Seeing the rage in tas king's eyes, ta continued, "He is being held, awaiting your pleasure."

Forcing himself not to give into his anger, Ankou took slow, deep breaths.  "So Kate has been kidnapped by Duibhne and Gormal."

The monarch's voice was mild, but Tairise knew the fury that boiled beneath that deceptively calm surface.  Choosing tas words carefully, ta said, "I believe so, your majesty.  There is no other scenario I can think of that fits all the available evidence."

Knowing he was a hair's breadth from losing control, Ankou focused on breathing in and out.  "Where have they gone?"

"I don't know their destination, but they left through the caves," the Elf pointed to the door ta had brought tas king to.

Considering the options, Ankou realized only one fit.  "They are taking her to the portal.  They intend to send her back to the human world."

Nodding, Tairise conceded, "That is possible.  If so, they will be breaking one of the most basic tenets of the law.  They know that, so I can't think what their plan might be afterward."

Getting an iron grip on his temper, Ankou forced himself to think through the possibilities.  He could use the Black Coach to get to the portal ahead of them, but he would run the risk that they would realize he was waiting and alter their plans.  If they did that, he would have to hunt them without the advantage of knowing their destination.

As he debated his options, a scene flickered before his eyes of Kate's body lying cold and white in the snow.  The Black Coach was in the background.  The vision made him realize his instinct to follow behind Duibhne and Gormal, instead of racing ahead of them, was the right one.  He had never been more grateful for his prophetic power and he sent a silent prayer of thanks to the goddess.  With his decision made, he turned to his counselor and said one word. "Go."

"I can accompany you, if you wish, your majesty," ventured the Elf.

Shaking his head, Ankou put aside all good and gentle feelings.  As he fully embraced his anger for the first time in a long time, his eyes glowed and his teeth elongated.  Focusing his power, he summoned the Genii Cucullati and smiled.  "I have all the aid I will need."

The evil light behind tas friend's smile made Tairise gasp.  As the ghostly forms of the Genii Cucullati congealed into existence, ta backed away, trembling.  The hooded spirits were the stuff of nightmares.  Ta almost pitied Gormal and Duibhne.

With a gesture, the Winter king set the Genii Cucullati on the trail of the two Elves.  The wraiths swirled around him, lifting him into their embrace, and surged through the door to the tunnel beyond.  As they departed, an eerie howl filled the hallway sending Tairise running for the stairs.  The wind of their passage swept the door closed behind them, and the resulting bang echoed through the empty corridor.  The noise jarred the Elf to tas senses and ta paused on the stairs, looking over tas shoulder.

What ta saw made ta rub tas eyes to clear them.  But the image remained.  The place where the hooded spirits had manifested now held two glowing, blood-red outlines.  One male.  One female.  Tairise shuddered.  The Genii Cucullati were outside the mortal realm.  Creatures of the Summerlands, they answered to rules beyond the ken of even the wisest Fae.  By attempting to tamper with the Siorghra bond, Duibhne and Gormal had earned their fate.  But ta did not envy them.

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 1276

Hey Everyone! 😊

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Twelve-Hundred-Seventy-Six:
My hominid-servant remains rather indolent, which is, again, consistent with the sort of weather that occurs at these coordinates during this portion of the planet’s revolution around the local star; however, she has begun the habit of spontaneously deciding to make new and unusual edibles. Fortunately, my furry companions and I are sometimes the beneficiaries of these unexpected bouts of creativity. And most of the delicacies she has produced, thus far, have been both interesting and delicious. I have to say, if I am going to be forced into a period of inactivity, there are worse ways to spend it.

Well... I guess hominids can occasionally come in handy for something. 😉 You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. 😉 Happy reading, everyone!

Things Aren't Always What They Seem...

Hey Everyone!! :-)

Here's a little bit more of the third installment in the Petri Dish Chronicles! As always, the disclaimer is that this is a draft and, as such, it's unedited and likely full of errors and is subject to revision, revamping, and being completely scrapped and rewritten. But, with that in mind, I'm reasonably satisfied with the basics of it, at least at the moment, or I wouldn't have bothered posting it. Enjoy! :-)

Excerpt from Shifting Paradigms:
“There are a lot of markets in the rainbow, but this one is larger and more diverse than any I’ve seen before. Usually, if I’m shopping, it's for something specific, and I stick to niche markets, but this..." Chessie shook her head. “This is something else entirely.”

An alien of a species Petri didn’t recognize completed a complicated gesture involving its limbs and a lot of head bobbing that the human merchant it was interacting with seemed to understand and agree to the terms of. The man, in turn, waved over a male Paka, who began performing what looked like a ritual dance to Petri. She wasn’t sure if the dance was part of the negotiations or if that was what the alien had bought, but the two moved off into the crowd floating above them as the human turned to the next customer.

What caught Petri’s eye next outraged her. What appeared to be a young, human child, no more than 5 or 6 years old, was being auctioned off to a small group of adult humans not far from where they were standing. She moved to get closer and try to help the child, but a hand on her arm stopped her. Whipping her head around, she saw it was Vlad who had grabbed her. Her eyes flew to meet his.

“You may not interfere.”

“You’re just going to allow this?" she gasped, pointing at the seemingly terrified child for emphasis.

“You need to remember, all is not what it appears here. Just because a person’s avatar is that of a child does not mean the person is a child. What you see as a human child may be a human adult, an adult of another species, or a non-sentient program. Also, the sale may very well be with the consent of all involved. If I’m not mistaken, you, yourself, engaged in not dissimilar transactions regarding your physical body not too long ago.”

Some of the tenseness left Petri’s posture. “So, that’s not really a kid?”

Vlad shrugged. “I’m simply reminding you that emotional reactions to what you perceive to be true about others are not appropriate here.”
