Who Is Mistral Dawn?

Mistral Dawn is a thirty-something gal who has lived on both coasts of the US but somehow never in the middle. She currently resides in the Southeast US with her kitty cats (please spay or neuter! :-)) where she works as a hospital drudge and attends graduate school. Taken By The Huntsman is her first effort at writing fiction and if it is well received she has ideas for several more novels and short-stories in this series. Please feel free to visit her on FaceBook or drop her a line at mistralkdawn@gmail.com

#Agent Thoth's #Personal Log: Day 878

Hey Everyone! :-)

Agent Thoth discusses more of the trials and tribulations associated with living with hominids. Incidentally, if you've missed Agent Thoth's earlier entries, you can find them here: Thoth's Journal

Department for the Preservation and Confirmation of Intelligent Life (DPCIL)
Agent Thoth's Personal Log

Day Eight-Hundred-Seventy-Eight:
When my hominid-servant emerged from her nightly hibernation, today, she found the juvenile felid resting among the branches of her dead tree. At first, it seemed she didn't notice because she walked right past him with no reaction. But she soon returned with her H2O spray machine and savagely soaked my young companion without regard for the care he had so obviously taken to keep from disturbing her decorations when he made his ascent.

Naturally, he demonstrated no such concern for her baubles in his expeditious evacuation of the tree branches. Unfortunately, this resulted in several of the trinkets smashing against the floor, which drove my hominid-servant into further hysterics. Only once she had finished chasing the poor creature through every room in my domicile with her dastardly device did my hominid-servant return to clean up the mess she had caused.

But, despite the fact that the damage to her ornaments was clearly the result of her own actions, my hominid-servant maintained a steady stream of invective towards my unfortunate compatriot. Which, once again, is just further proof of the inability of hominids to behave in anything resembling a rational manner.

Hominids are so unreasonable, sometimes. ;-) You may have noticed that Agent Thoth has a new look. I hope you like his new picture as much as I do, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, either way. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments. ;-) Happy reading, everyone!

Corruption And Cruelty, Common Bedfellows...

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I've got a little more of Alyce's adventure to share with you, today! Enjoy! :-)

Excerpt from Answers From Alyce:
"What's a concentration camp and how is it different from a prison," asked Squid-boy, apparently deciding to ignore my rude behavior.

"A prison is somewhere that a person who has been convicted of a crime is sent to serve a specific sentence. They know what they have been accused and found guilty of, they know how long their sentence is, there's due process and a right to representation, etc. There are an awful lot of problems with our criminal justice system, and the rights of people accused and convicted of crimes are violated with disturbing regularity, but at least they exist in theory."

I gestured at the exhibit. "These people don't even have that much protection under the law. They're just sent wherever the government wants to send them, for however long the government wants to hold them, and the only way they have a lawyer when they finally do get a day in court is if they pay for it themselves. The places they're sent are just holding facilities to warehouse people the government doesn't like. To concentrate them all in one place."

"Ah, thus the term 'concentration camps'," said Yax.

I nodded. "And they aren't being separated by size. Children are being taken away from their parents. For the adults and the older children, men and women and girls and boys are often separated. For the youngest children, toddlers and infants, they might not be separated by gender."

Squid-boy blinked at me. "I was under the impression that your species conformed to the mammalian norm of adults caring for partially developed offspring until they reach physical maturity. Is this not the case?"

My lips twitched at the way he described human families, but I nodded. "We do. Most parents love their children a lot and would do anything to see them safe and happy."

He made a buzzing sound in the back of his throat and gestured at where the uniformed robots were tearing the small robots away from the larger ones. "Then why separate the offspring from the parents?"

"Because the people running our government don't like these people and want to cause them pain. It's a deliberate act of cruelty. They took those kids away and didn't even keep track of who they took them from; they never intended to return them. They just wanted to hurt people they don't like."

"That's…"

"Barbaric. I know."

"Why separate the older children from the younger children?" interjected Yax.

I sighed. "Because older children and younger children require different types and levels of care, and because older children who don't know how to care for younger children might accidentally hurt them. Plus, separating them means that the private corporations that are running the places where the kids are being kept can charge more. And the people who own those corporations are friends with and donors to the people running our government. They put the youngest kids into what they call 'tender age facilities' and they can charge a premium for them, but really they're just concentration camps for babies."

"Corruption and cruelty working in tandem."

I nodded. "Those two things often go hand-in-hand in our society."

Something Worth Watching?

Hey Everyone!! :-)

I'm back today with another video I wanted to share. I wanted to share this story because it's a good example of where mainstream, corporate media fails to properly inform The People. It's also really good news for people who want the government to represent regular, working Americans and not the oligarchs. It's something that everyone should know about so that we can put pressure on our own elected representatives to support it. So, please take a few minutes to watch the video, and then consider writing or calling your Congresspeople and Senators and letting them know you know about this piece of legislation and what you think about it. Peace!

Quick And Easy Stuffed Peppers #Recipe!

Hey Everyone!! :-)

This is an easy, and delicious, way to use up leftovers and make a quick dinner when you're short on time. Enjoy! :-)

Ingredients:
6 large bell peppers (your choice of color)
2 cups cheddar or mozzarella or pepper jack cheese shredded
2 cups cooked rice, quinoa, or couscous
1 15oz can kidney or black beans drained
1 15 oz can corn drained
1 15 oz can crushed tomatoes
1 cup leftover vegetables (any kind)
4 cloves garlic minced fine
1 onion chopped fine
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp cumin
2 tsp turmeric
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp harissa paste
Salt and pepper to taste

Cut the tops off of the peppers and remove the ribs and seeds. Put the cleaned pepper shells in boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes, remove them from the boiling water, and set them aside in a buttered baking dish. In a large bowl, mix together the grain, beans, corn, tomatoes, 1 cup of the cheese, and the seasonings. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter until the butter melts. Add the onions and saute until they soften and become translucent. Add the garlic and continue to saute until the onions start to caramelize. Add the contents of the bowl and stir to thoroughly mix. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Remove the pan from the heat and scoop the contents of the pan into the pepper shells in equal portions. Top each pepper with an equal amount of the remaining cup of cheese. Place the baking dish in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake until the outsides of the peppers start to blacken and the cheese browns, approximately 25 minutes. Serve piping hot.

Bon appetit!

Asked And Answered... ;-)

Hey Everyone!! :-)

Since the holiday season is upon us, I thought I'd give everyone a tiny reminder of how the Winter Fae celebrate to help get your weekend started off right! Enjoy! ;-)

Excerpt from Captivated by the Winter King:
"Are you interested?"

Barking a laugh, he rose and extended a hand towards her. When she gave him her hand, he pulled her to her feet and against his body. He used one hand to hold her hard against himself while he threaded the fingers of the other hand through her short, red hair. Capturing her head, he held it angled to the side and skimmed his lips up the milky-white column of her throat.

When he reached her lips he hovered above them with his own and looked into her eyes. She wore a soft, dazed expression, and her body was pliant in his arms. Lowering his mouth, he claimed her with a deep, passionate kiss. She opened to him, denying him nothing as he explored every inch of her mouth with his tongue and lips. Her surrender brought him to the edge of forgetting himself, and it was only with great difficulty that he broke their kiss.

Looking at her, he saw her eyes were closed and her skin was flushed. Her lips were swollen and, when she cracked her eyelids to look at him, they curved into a satisfied smile. He smiled back. "It would be my pleasure," he answered.
